Musical Theater Conference

Every year at Kildonan Park, Rainbow Stage hosts a student musical theater meeting. Aimed at middle and high school students, attendees will choose and attend four of eight unique sessions covering the fundamental aspects of 'acting'. Attending students will also receive Vouchers for free tickets to that year's summer production! The Student Musical Theater Conference introduces participants to the various departments that work together to produce musicals. Each year there is a specific new theme. From design and prop building, to choreography, acting and singing; participants will gain insights and resources about the roles, professional processes, trade-offs, and career opportunities in each division. The Musical Theater Conference is held each spring at Kildonan Park in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Treaty 1 Territory held on the Rainbow Stage.

The program is designed to connect with high school and middle school students across the city and beyond. The purpose of the Musical Theater Conference is to develop and educate future patrons of the arts, impart specific creative and industry skills, and raise awareness of the opportunities a career in the arts has to offer. The program is generously supported by Canada Life Insurance and private donations. They believe everyone can write a song, and this workshop will teach you how! On their own, the idea of writing an original song can seem daunting, but in this workshop, students will work together as a small group to brainstorm ideas and write their next breakout hit! While exploring important songwriting elements such as form, style, genre, and tempo, students will have fun exchanging ideas in a fun, inclusive environment, and learn how their funniest suggestions can lead to a hit song!

In this acting class, students will learn how to become better actors by listening to and responding to their scene partners. Drawing on the fundamentals of improvisation, clowns, and improvisational comedy, Dell'Arte participants will experience what it means to act is to react" and "never say no" in a silly and safe atmosphere. Cultivate your creative voice by learning how to listen harder, react faster and start giving up trying to control your environment. In this brand new class, students will learn and apply the fundamental tools and techniques painters use to create staged environments to stunning effect. Join them for an in-depth look at the role set painters play in creating musicals, and some of the ways they use texture, color, and size to realize the set designer's ideas. Through fun partner exercises, students will have the opportunity to put these tools and techniques into practice, bringing their own landscape designs to life! "
